Just wanted to say a huge thank you to Olly and Ash for their excellent tuition (and patience) over the weekend at Vobster Quay. Josh and I had a fantastic time...made all the more satisfying as we passed our exam! Tim and Josh (Guy)

Thanks to all of the Subaquaholics team for putting on another well organised weekend of diving at Brixham. I'm hoping to pop down to the coast again before the summer is out if I can find a gap in my diary - the diving weekends seem to be clashing with weddings this year!

Here at Subaquaholics we believe it is always a good idea to come along to a discover scuba session to find out what it is all about before committing to an Padi Openwater Course. The discover scuba is £25, however this fee comes off the openwater course if you decide to carry on.

All of our discover scuba sessions are held in very small groups to make sure you get the most out of the session, the maximum in one group would be four. The discover scuba session starts with some paperwork and a dry session explaining some of the theory behind scuba diving. We make sure we have covered all safety aspects and fully explain how the equipment works.

Bristol Discover ScubaDiving is all about learning how to control your buoyancy underwater and safe diving procedures such has how to monitor how much air you have, or how to equalise your ears if you feel any pressure building up (this can happen even in a swimming pool, but is very easy to learn) .We explain all the hand signals used and how to communicate underwater. We then take you on to the poolside and show you the equipment and explain how we set it up and what all the different components do, it is not difficult or complicated.

The jacket is called a BCD which stands for buoyancy control devise, you have a tank on your back with all your air in, this is exactly the same as the air we breath normally, and we have the regulators and gauges which you use to breath though and check how much air you have. Then we are ready to enter the water in the shallow end where we can stand up and help you in to the scuba equipment, ensuring it fits and is comfortable. Once you are ready we show you how to take your first breaths though the regulator, descend into water you can still stand up in, and then slowly start to swim. You use your fins to help move you along and try and keep your arms still.

Discover Scuba KidsAs the session progresses we can then teach at a pace that suits you, it is a little bit like learning to ride a bike, where at first you may feel a bit wobbly, but after a bit of practice you get the hang of it. One of the best things about scuba is the freedom you feel underwater. After you feel you have mastered the basics, we then start to show you a couple of skills. These are demonstrated by the PADI Instructor then you can have a go, there’s no pressure to get everything right first time all things new often take a bit of practice. We often explain that learning to scuba dive is similar to learning how to drive, as you may know the name of everything and what it is supposed to do however getting everything in the right sequence smoothly is often the tricky bit! Even as a qualified openwater dive you still have plenty to learn. Scuba diving is not something you can learn in one session.

At the end of the session everyone comes out of the water with huge smiles on their faces and a feeling of satisfaction for trying something a bit different. Whilst you get yourself dried off we sort out your equipment, then meet up for a debrief, we then normally head to the pub for a well deserved drink, as scuba diving can give you a thirst. Here we can then discuss further course information if you have the bug and want to keep learning.
